Cannock Chase Turners
is a group of really enthusiastic and some very experienced woodturners
who meet on
the Second
Wednesday of Every Month and at almost every meeting
we enjoy the ideas
and suggestions made by a visiting demonstrator.
Our meetings are held at the Methodist
Church Hall Poplar Street,
Norton Canes, Cannock, Staffs., WS11 9SG from 7pm until 10pm
John
Buckley-Golder, who had connections with Norton Canes High School,
contacted
Brian Rutter and myself to discuss starting a Woodturning Club in 1994. So
using Adverts and making contact with friends and acquaintances a
public
meeting was
arranged and to our surprise about 20 people turned up. At the
inaugural
meeting it was agreed that meetings would be held every fortnight and
that
Annual Subscriptions would be £10. The
High School Woodwork Room and Engineering Workshop was made available,
all free
of charge, but one of the teachers, Dave Cottier, always had to be
present. Time
went by and Caretakers changed. It was unfortunate that we could only
open at
7.00pm and had to be out by 9.00pm. This was not really long enough to
have
professional demonstrators. In
2004 we decided to move our venue to Trinity Church Hall, Norton Canes.
Subscriptions were increased and meetings became monthly. We were lucky
in
obtaining a Lottery Grant, which enabled us to expand and to invite top
demonstrators. Membership increased and we now have a first class club.
Last
Year we staged an exhibition at Chasewater
Innovations Centre where various samples of members work were put on
display
for a whole week. We also had a number of members demonstrating
woodturning and
other crafts. Every weekday we had visits from schoolchildren mornings
and
afternoons and we had lots of lovely cards and letters from them
afterwards
saying how they had enjoyed the experience.
